New Patient Forms

We perform a comprehensive assessment of cognitive and behavioral functions using a set of standardized tests and procedures. Various tests are used to measure:
- Problem solving and conceptualization
- Planning and organizing
- Attention, memory and learning
- Academic skills
- Perceptual and motor abilities
- Emotions, behavior and personality
These tests are administered by Ph.D. psychologists here at ADHD Boston, and are recommended where there is a suspected impairment of cognitive and emotional functioning. This testing can greatly enhance diagnosis, treatment selection, and educational planning.
Because each person is different, the tests selected may vary. The doctor selects the tests to administer, then scores and interprets them afterward. Each neuropsychological examination is tailored to meet the needs of the individual.
The tests take about 6 hours and do not involve any invasive procedures. The testing report, which takes a few weeks to write, will help confirm or clarify diagnosis, identify strengths and weaknesses, document changes in intellectual functioning, provide recommendations for compensatory strategies, and may indicate referral to specialists in education, neurology, psychiatry or psychotherapy.
Dr. Thor Bergersen has learned that most people are not eager to take medications, and would rather try changing their lifestyles and habits before taking this step. With this in mind, he will meet with you to discuss your treatment options and synthesize the information that has been gathered. Symptoms such as distraction, anxiety, depression and insomnia will be evaluated, as will their potential to respond favorably to medication treatment. Dr. Bergersen emphasizes the rationale for treatment, including the biological basis of symptoms, the way each medication works, and the potential risks and benefits of taking medication. He will work with you to decide if treatment with medication is indicated, and most importantly, if you are comfortable with taking medication for your symptoms.
