Therapeutic Tutoring
Therapeutic Tutoring is a hybrid of academic tutoring and Cognitive Behavioral Therapy. Typically, a therapeutic tutor will begin by spending some time with the student, conversing about academic preferences and dislikes, while building an atmosphere of trust and safety. Discussions allow enough room for expression of frustration towards school and personal ability, while also giving a fair amount of time to strengths. Then therapeutic tutor will spend most sessions observing the student’s approach to homework or studying, noticing the interplay of thought and emotion, intervening when needed. By retraining the student to process emotions and information adaptively, the therapeutic tutor will give the student the necessary skills to eliminate emotional barriers to learning and perform optimally.
